Automakers have once again started to release their sales figures for the month of March. One car manufacturer that has already reported their sales for the month of March is the luxury division of Honda which is Acura.
The luxury brand owned by Honda is known for producing high performance luxury and near-luxury vehicles. The brand was established in March of 1986 which makes the brand 21 years old at present. Recently, the brand released its 2007 March sales which show a 6.5 percent reduction in their sales for the month compared to last year. Last month, Acura sold 16,986 vehicles while last year, the Acura brand sold 17,524 units for the month of March.
While the brand may have suffered lowered overall sales, they announced that they have set a sales record for light trucks. Acura reported selling 7,209 units of light trucks for the month of March. The record setting sales of light trucks is due to the increasing popularity of the MDX and the RDX crossover sport utility vehicles.
The Acura MDX is a mid-size crossover SUV sold in the U.S. market since the 2001 model year. It is the first crossover SUV to feature a third row seating. The Acura RDX on the other hand is a compact crossover SUV which made its debut at the 2006 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS). Its competition includes the BMW X3, the Lincoln MKX and the Land Rover LR2.
Sales for the mid-size MDX reached 4,785 units and that is a sure improvement over last year. In March 200, Acura sold 4,682 units of the popular MDX. Year to date sale of the MDX is also up with 13,268 units sold for the first quarter of the year. Last year, after the first three months, Acura sold 12,833 units of the MDX.
The Acura RDX, on the other hand, is a new addition to Acura’s lineup posted strong sales figure of 2,424 units. Year to date sales for the RDX is now at 6,256 units. The best selling model for the Japanese brand is the Acura TL, the entry-level luxury car from the Asian outfit. The TL is the successor of the Acura Vigor and it is also the second best selling luxury sedan in the United States. Sales for the Acura TL reach 5,769 units. This number though is significantly lower than last year’s March sale for the model. In March 2006, Acura sold 6,767 units of the TL.
Another fast selling Acura model is the Acura TSX. The TSX is an entry-level sedan slated to compete against the BMW 3-Seiries, the Audi A4, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, the Saab 9-3, and the Lexus IS. All these cars from Honda’s luxury brand are known for their smooth operation, as smooth as Volvo wheel bearings.

But the Acura prototype earned the pole at Long Beach and won the opening ALMS round at Sebring. The automaker is not only making a good name in the manufacture of quality auto parts like the Acura cold air intake but also the brand is also popular in the racing arena. In GT2, the 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR, which was new for the year, has finished second to the Ferrari in all three races. But Porsche tracks the manufacturers chase by only 12 points going into Houston.
Uwe Brettel, the Porsche Motorsport North America president, said that he would rather be way ahead in both categories, but he pointed out the close competition is good for the classes and good for the series. “We would like to be far ahead in the points - especially in the GT2 class - but the fans come to the races to see good racing, and Porsche customers teams have provided just that during the first three events. Patrick Long and Darren Law were less than five seconds short of winning Long Beach in their Flying Lizard Porsche, while Jorg Bergmeister in the Lizard team Porsche lost to the Ferrari by two-thousandths of a second at Sebring,” said Brettel.
He added, “Our overall win by the Penske Porsche RS Spyder at Long Beach was exciting, but the Acura provided stiff competition by taking the pole and turning the fastest race lap.” Brettel also pointed out that, with the street course in Houston being repaved for this year’s event, and the race being run in April instead of July, the heat and roughness of the course which plagued teams a year ago should not be a factor this year.
In the previous year, both Penske Porsche RS Spyders did not finish the Houston event due to transmission problems linked to the beating of the cars took from the bumpy track surface. For Porsche, the Long Beach overall victory by Romain Dumas and Timo Bernhard in the LMP2 class Penske Porsche RS Spyder was its second one-two overall finish in the ALMS. Additionally, it was the first time any manufacturer has swept the overall podium in ALMS.
In GT2, the Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 RSR team cars have finished second to the winning Ferrari at all three events so far this season, with the Jorg Bergmeister/Johannes van Overbeek number 45 racer second at Sebring and St. Petersburg, and the number 44 team car of Patrick Long and Darren Law second last weekend in Long Beach. Both cars will be in the hunt for their first win of the season at Houston, with team principal Seth Neiman replacing Long in the 44 Porsche.

Acura is currently absorbed in launching new and redesigned models to boost its lineup. It can be recalled that the automaker introduced the 2009 RL at this year’s Chicago Auto Show. Additionally, the automaker will also unleash a new TL sedan later this year.
Prior to the New York auto show, the sports sedan’s sibling, Honda Accord for Europe, will be displayed at the 2008 Geneva auto show in early March. The second largest Japanese automaker, hitherto, is only introducing isolated aspects of the redesigned Accord sedan and the Accord Tourer wagon for Europe, based on the concept displayed at last year’s Frankfurt Auto Show. The redesigned Accord sedan and Accord Tourer wagon will go on sale this summer.
Watchers in the industry expect the new TSX to be equipped with the turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine currently featured in the RDX. Also available under the sports sedan’s hood will be Honda’s all-new turbocharged 2.2-liter i-DTEC diesel engine, which produces about 150 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque. The 2009 TSX is anticipated to become Honda’s first car with a diesel in America.
